 Faith Formation Leader 

 


 

Purposes

Depending upon attendance of children during scheduled services:

 

To nurture children aged 5 through high school in their faith formation and to support parents and guardians with children and the congregation in their mission to help children grow in the warm embrace of the Christian Church. A curriculum is provided. 

 

Relationships

The Faith Formation Leader reports to the Pastor, who is head of staff and collaborates closely with EPC’s Faith Formation Team as well as volunteers who help during instruction periods.

 

Hours

The Faith Formation Leader Leader will be present at EPC from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm on Sundays and will work with the Pastor or Faith Formation Team to determine when 2.5 hours of on-site preparation and other activities will be scheduled. The role requires between 5-8 hours per week.

 

Note: Sunday School activities are not conducted on Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning unless previously agreed to by the Faith Formation Leader Leader and Pastor.

 

Compensation: $25 per hour

 


 

Responsibilities

1. Faith Formation & Class Engagement

  • Prepare and lead Sunday School lessons (up to 45 minutes) during the worship service, using the provided curriculum and/or creating original curriculum as needed.

  • Facilitate activities such as reading aloud and leading crafts as outlined in the curriculum.

  • Escort children to and from the sanctuary at designated times.

  • Create and deliver brief Children’s Messages during church service as scheduled.

  • Prepare and lead confirmation classes using the provided curriculum for 8-10 weeks once a year or as needed.

  • Guide children in engaging with the EPC garden (bi-monthly during appropriate season) in coordination with the EPC gardening team.

  • Complete disciplinary reports as needed and communicate with parents/guardians regarding behavioral concerns. A copy of each report shall be submitted to the Pastor, Head of Staff.

  • Assist in the Nursery on Sundays from 10:15 to 11:30 AM as needed, if no children are in attendance for Faith Formation classes/activities.

2. Leadership & Administration

  • Ensure necessary copies, craft supplies, and other materials are ready for instruction periods. Request supplies through the EPC office as needed.

  • Maintain email correspondence with families of young children and volunteers, using Google applications (Docs, Sheets, Calendar, etc.).

  • Attend the Leadership Breakfast (on a Sunday morning at 9:30am every other month), as scheduled and participate in Faith Formation discussions as requested. 

  • Maintain communication with the Pastor, Faith Formation Team, and volunteers to coordinate Sunday School activities and special events, as requested.

  • Write a 1 page annual report in January summarizing Faith Formation events throughout the year.

     3. Special Events and Outreach

  • Assist in planning, coordinating and attending all church sponsored Faith Formation events that involve children, ie. Vacation Bible School (VBS) Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Christmas Pageant.

     4. Classroom & Church Space Support

  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom, ensuring all supplies and materials are in order.

 

 


Accreditation & Job Classification

  • Requirements: High School Diploma + Background Check (per Admin. Manual).

  • Additional: Reference check and basic application required. Elmhurst Presbyterian Church will at its expense undertake a background check as a condition of employment.  

  • Job Classification: Part-time employee, see notes below.

  • Performance Evaluations: As needed, per HR policy.

Job Performance/Evaluations
Regular feedback is encouraged, and individuals should seek clarification if needed. Semi-formal quarterly check-ins will be conducted in the first year, transitioning to annual assessments thereafter.

Note: This is a part-time, hourly position and does not include benefits such as paid holidays or health insurance.

 

In accordance with the Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA), employees will accrue 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours in a 12-month period. Paid leave may be used for any reason and does not require explanation or documentation. Leave accrual begins on the first day of employment, and leave may be used beginning on the 90th day of employment.

 

All paid leave policies will be administered in alignment with the EPC Administrative Manual and applicable Illinois law.
